Active Takeoff Basic Notions - Lexical

The objects

The objects are created by the measuring and note tools in the Home tab ribbon. As soon as an object is created, it becomes a member of a group.

The groups

Groups are a collection of objects of the same nature and sharing the same parameters. A group can also contain one single object. Object groups can be spread on many pages of the plan and on many layers of different plans but never on more than one layer of the same page.

The object types

The object types are objects of different groups associated to their creation tool (Area, perimeter, counter, length, zone marker, angle).

Focus of an object or a group

One object or one group of objects receives the focus when it is selected on the canvas, in the Properties grid dropdown list or from the Groups panel. When the focus is set to an object or a group of objects, handles or anchors will appear. If only one object or one object group is selected, Active Takeoff will display its properties in the Properties panel and will highlight the group in the Groups panel. Many groups of different nature can be set to focus simultaneously. To choose and set focus to all groups present on a layer of a given plan, use the keyboard (Ctrl-A) or the contextual menu from the cursor by right-clicking the mouse and select the item "Select All Objects for this Layer"

The Contextual menus

Each object encloses its contextual menu that displays when the the mouse is right-clicked after the object gets the focus.

The mouse

The mouse is the most important tool to use Active Takeoff properly. The software uses both left and right button, the mouse wheel as well as mouse methods such as drag and drop, the click, the double-click etc.

Vector Graphics Image Format

Files in .PDF, .DWG, .DXF formats are vector graphics files. They are made of an array of coordinates that will create an image once read by a software such as Adobe Reader or Autocad.

Pixelized or Bitmap Image format

Bitmap images commonly come in .BMP, .GIF, .PNG, .JPG and .TIF formats. In a bitmap, each point (pixel) contains the information about its color and transparency. An image can be made of millions of pixels, depending on its resolution.

Anchor Points (Handles)

The anchor points can be manipulated to move or adjust the shape of an object. They can be found on all measuring objects, mostly on corners or ends of the object, depending on the nature of the object

The project

The project represents the file that is saved for any given customer/job. A project contains one or many pages of a plan, all the measuring groups drawn on the pages, the comments and the report associated with the customer/job.

The plan

The plan can contain one or many pages. A plan or plan pages can be associated with a project by inserting them in the Plans tab.

The Slope (pitch) factors

The slope factors are calculated from two (2) views :

The elevation view (or seen from the street) :

The plan view (or seen from the sky) :

Depending on the view to be measured, select the appropriate choice in the Slope factor interface dropdown menu.

Slope factors can be entered in percentages (%), in degrees (°) or in (x/12) ratios. Select the appropriate button and adjust the slider to the right slope factor. Use the  (-) and (+) buttons for a fine adjustment. Click on the "OK" button to confirm your choice. The slope factor of an object is changeable afterwards from the Properties panel.

The object colors

All objects are assigned a color. Active Takeoff assigns a color in sequential way. These colors are editable by the user when creating the object or within the Properties panel. Just click a color from the palettes to assign it to the object. Two palettes are available :

The Standard Palette, available in a dropdown menu :

The Advanced Palette, available by clicking on the "Palette" button :
